Some shocking statistics about Malaria - in 2013 there were 198 million malaria cases across the globe. This mosquito-borne disease claims over 500,000 lives a year; 90% are in Sub-Saharan Africa, the majority are children under-five.
We were approached by GSK to highlight their support of the global health community in it’s efforts to help fight this disease and decided that an animation how mosquito nets and medicines are being used to help reduce the number of malaria cases and how health workers would educate people about the disease.
I was asked to Art Direct this animation and straight away felt that photography wasn’t the right route. We needed to get the message across in a way that didn’t cause distress as well as keeping the look consistent. I scamped up some storyboards with a producer and a PM and we decided the simplest way to tell the story.
I then commissioned an illustrator to draw up some outlined versions of the scamps which with a textured background really was an excellent start but again it needed lifting visually. By adding some water colour tones to highlight important image and text messages then we got that lift. Next, we chose a subtle musical score to go with the piece to add some mood to the animation. A very pleasing outcome of a delicate story but with a powerful message and visual design.
